NLGRB noted that many student teachers were unaware of the legal gaming age and that some already had mild dependencies on online betting. To address these issues, the Board recommended integrating responsible gaming into teacher training modules, creating peer-support clubs, establishing counseling services, and strengthening monitoring of learners.

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB), through its Responsible Gaming Department, conducted an awareness and sensitization session at Sancta Maria Core Primary Teather’s College, Nkokonjeru, Buikwe District.

The engagement, which brought together over 150 student teachers and 35 tutors, aimed to raise awareness about responsible gaming and the dangers of underage gaming.

The training had two key goals; to educate student teachers aged 25 and above on responsible gaming and the risks of gaming as well as to sensitize younger participants on the legal, psychological, and social dangers of underage gaming.

As future educators, the participants were reminded of their vital role in shaping young minds and preventing gambling culture from spreading among school learners.

Key Messages Delivered

· Underage gaming is illegal in Uganda; only individuals aged 25 and above may engage in betting.

· Gaming is and can be psychologically harmful or addictive, leading to poor academic performance, school dropout, financial losses, depression, and even suicidal tendencies.

· Student teachers were urged to take professional responsibility in counseling and guiding learners at risk.

This engagement is part of the initiative and an important step in empowering student teachers to fight the spread of gaming among learners. Teachers remain the first line of defense, and by modeling responsible behavior, they can help build a safer and more informed generation.
