NLGRB SENSITISES KITOORO MARKET COMMUNITY

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB), through its Responsible Gaming team, recently engaged traders at Kitooro Market in a focused sensitisation session on responsible gaming and player protection.

In collaboration with mental health specialists from Butabika Hospital, the engagement reinforced a key regulatory principle: gaming must remain a form of entertainment; never a threat to financial stability, mental well-being, or livelihoods.

The session emphasized Informed and responsible participation, setting personal limits on time and expenditure, recognizing early indicators of harmful gaming behaviour and how to access appropriate support services.

During the session, traders were sensitised on the importance of setting personal limits on time and money spent on gaming, recognising early warning signs of problematic gaming behaviour, understanding that gaming should never interfere with family responsibilities or business activities and knowing when and where to seek help.

“Gaming should never cost someone their livelihood, their peace of mind, or their family. Our role is to ensure it remains entertainment — nothing more, nothing less.” Said Susan Hope, the Senior Responsible Gaming Officer while speaking to traders.

Mental health experts from Butabika Hospital also provided guidance on stress management, coping mechanisms, and the importance of early intervention where gaming behaviour begins to affect personal or professional life.

NLGRB continues to implement responsible gaming initiatives as part of its broader mandate to ensure a fair, transparent, and sustainable gaming industry in Uganda. Community engagements such as this form a critical pillar of the Board’s strategy, ensuring that awareness extends beyond operators to everyday citizens.
