Protecting Minors: NLGRB Sensitises Students on the Dangers of Underage Gaming

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) has intensified its nation wide campaign against underage gaming.

Through its Responsible Gaming team, the Board conducted sensitisation outreach reaching over 10,000 students across schools in Masindi and Kiryandongo districts, where learners were engaged on the risks associated with underage gaming.

Some of the schools engaged included Masindi Army Secondary School, Masindi Secondary School, Kigumba Intensive Secondary School, Green Valley Secondary School, Iman Secondary School, among others.

“We need our learners to maintain a focused and disciplined mindset. If their attention becomes preoccupied with activities such as betting, it will inevitably affect their concentration and hinder their academic progress,” said Agnes Nakazibwe, Head Teacher of Masindi Secondary School.

During the sensitisation engagements, the Responsible Gaming team informed students that underage gaming can jeopardise their education, often resulting in poor academic performance, increased absenteeism, and, in severe cases, school dropouts. They further highlighted the potential mental health risks associated with early exposure to gaming, including anxiety, stress, and addictive behaviors that can affect overall wellbeing and decision making.

The team emphasised that engaging in gaming as a minor is not only unlawful but also exposes students to long term social and financial consequences. Learners were encouraged to focus on their education and to seek support when faced with peer pressure or financial temptations linked to betting.

The teachers were urged to remain vigilant and closely monitor their students’ activities at school to prevent early exposure and addiction.

In addition, the team paid a courtesy visit to the District Education Officers of Masindi and Kiryandongo, who pledged their support in helping the Board reinforce the message, “Say No to Underage Gaming.”

The NLGRB’s school initiatives not only reflect its broader commitment to protecting minors from underage gaming but also promote a culture of responsible behaviour that extends beyond the classroom.
