Rakai Schools Lead the Charge Against Student Gambling

A recent awareness initiative by the Responsible Gaming Department across secondary schools in Rakai District is taking a firm stand against the rising threat of underage gaming and betting. This proactive campaign, targeting students, educators, and administrators, aimed to dismantle the allure of gambling by exposing its severe risks and promoting mental well-being and academic dedication.

The team, visiting five schools and reaching over 3,000 students, delivered a powerful, evidence-based message. It clarified that gambling under 25 is illegal under Uganda’s Lotteries and Gaming Act Cap 334 and, more importantly, is developmentally dangerous. Key dangers highlighted included:

  1. Academic Collapse – Gambling steals focus and time from studies.
  2. Addiction – It quickly shifts from fun to a compulsive habit.
  3. Financial and Emotional Ruin – Misuse of school fees leads to shame, despair, and in extreme cases, suicidal tendencies.

Feedback revealed that students are frequently exposed to betting via mobile phones and peer pressure, confirming the critical need for this intervention. Teachers expressed deep concern about predatory advertising on social media and sports platforms.

The Rakai initiative is more than just a campaign—it’s a blueprint for other districts and countries grappling with the rise of underage gambling. By combining education, regulation, and community involvement, we can protect young people from the hidden dangers of betting and empower them to pursue meaningful, productive futures.
