National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board Hosts Stakeholder Engagement with Gaming Operators to strengthen Regulatory Compliance

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) recently held a high-level stakeholder engagement with gaming operators across Uganda. The event aimed at reinforcing regulatory compliance with a focus on responsible gaming and adherence to the law.

Held at the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development’s Conference Hall in Kampala, the engagement focused on critical issues facing the gaming industry, including the enforcement of responsible gaming, anti-money laundering (AML) compliance, and tax obligations. The NLGRB emphasized its commitment to working closely with gaming operators to ensure they meet the legal and ethical standards required by Lotteries and Gaming Act, 2016.

A key focus of the engagement was the need for responsible gaming measures to protect punters, particularly young people and those prone to problem gambling. NLGRB officials outlined stricter regulations aimed at enforcing age verification and promoting responsible gaming practices.

During the engagement, Mr. Aloysius Mugasa Adyeri, Chairman of the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board, appreciated the gaming operator for responding to the stakeholder engagement request.

 “The Board is committed to working with gaming operators to improve the image of the gaming sector. Responsible gaming is the core responsibility of all stakeholders, especially gaming operators,” Mugasa noted.

Another major topic was the use of technology in both enhancing and complicating regulatory compliance. The NLGRB emphasized the need for all operators to integrate their systems with the National Central Electronic Monitoring System (NCEMS) to enable transparent and accountable gaming sector.

Several gaming operators expressed their willingness to work closely with the NLGRB to enhance their compliance efforts. Mr. Jonathan Bakwega, a representative from the casino operators in Uganda, said, “We appreciate the current Board and management for the improved work relationship with gaming operators.”

The stakeholder engagement is part of an ongoing series of initiatives by the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board to promote responsible gaming, transparency, and accountability in Uganda’s gaming industry.
